Villers-Cotterêts under high security for the Francophonie Summit

This Friday, October 4, 2024, Villers-Cotterêts (Aisne) hosts the 19th International Francophonie Summit. An event that had not occurred in for 33 years. More than a hundred state and government representatives are expected. We take stock of the traffic restrictions and the exceptional security system deployed for the occasion.

This is unheard of in Aisne. Due to the 19th International Francophonie Summit being held this Friday, October 4 at the Cité internationale de la langue française, in Villers-Cotterêts, an exceptional security system will be put in place in and around the city.

This event, which has not been held in France for 33 years, will welcome more than a hundred representatives of states and governments. The Prime Minister therefore took a measure to major event decree.

Security is maximum. We consider all the threats, all the risks. And the system aims to respond to all these threats. It is a system worthy of the biggest events: Olympic Games, G7, G20… It is an event of the same stature“, explains Thomas Campeaux, the prefect of Aisne, on the eve of the Summit.

Regarding traffic, here are the restrictions that apply. Note that theThe activity of the majority of the city will be preserved, as will the operation of the SNCF station, assures the Aisne prefecture in its press release.

In the town of Villers-Cotterêts:

  • On October 4, between 6:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., access will be prohibited to pedestrians and vehicles in the streets adjacent to the Cité Internationale. Extensive controls on pedestrian traffic will be implemented in the surrounding Retz forest.
  • On October 4, between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., traffic and parking will be prohibited on the roads which will be used for the transport of delegations and the related car parks.

On the axes of approach:

  • For light vehicles, the RN2 will be closed around Villers-Cotterêts in the south-north direction from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (compulsory exit at Nanteuil-le-Haudouin) then in the north-south direction from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (compulsory exit at Montgobert ). Diversions will be put in place.
  • For heavy goods vehicles, the RN2 will be closed from Plessis-Belleville to , in both directions, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on October 4, with a compulsory exit at Plessis-Belleville in the south-north direction.

As far as possible, it is advisable to avoid the route taken by processions from towards Villers-Cotterêts (from Place Saint Augustin / boulevard Malesherbes towards Porte d’Asnières then the ring road and the A1 motorway) . For heavy goods vehicles a traffic ban will be in force today (see details and alternative routes below).

Five schools will be closed due to traffic restrictions in the northern part of the city: the Moncond’huy, Alexandre Dumas and Jean Zay schools, the Max Dussuchal and Saint-Nicolas colleges.

In all, nearly 1,500 personnel from the national gendarmerie are mobilized: 661 mobile gendarmes and CRS, 368 departmental gendarmes from Aisne, Oise and Seine-et-, as well as 180 motorcyclists. To which is added a device territorial intelligence and close protection and a vehicle demining system made up of deminers and canine teams.

The Air Force, for its part, will ensure respect for the airspace at Villers-Cotterêts by means of a detection and surveillance device and an interception and neutralization device. A temporary no-flight zone with a 15 km radius around the International City will be set up on Friday.

A “shelter”, a sort of mobile hospital, will be set up near the Cité Internationale. It will mobilize axonal and zonal SMURs and will be able to handle several absolute and relative emergencies simultaneously. And the Aisne helismur will be pre-positioned on a stadium. 300 firefighters will also be mobilized to provide emergency services and deal with other risks.

An inter-service command post will be positioned near the City and a logistics system will also be put in place, leading to the closure of public buildings located near the site as well as the privatization of two gas stations.
