The Broadway star of ‘Waitress’ and ‘Into The Woods’ was 48

In sad and astonishing news, Gavin Creel, one of the most popular and acclaimed leading men on Broadway, died today in Manhattan, just two months after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma . He was 48 years old.

His death was confirmed by his partner Alex Temple Ward. Creel had been undergoing treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York after being diagnosed with cancer in July.

One of Broadway’s finest musical theater performers, Creel made his Broadway debut in 2002 in the lead role of Thoroughly Modern Millie, earning a Tony Award nomination, a feat he would repeat seven years later in what would go on to become an iconic performance as Claude in the 2009 Broadway Revival Hair.

From 2012 to 2015, he played the role of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon, a role he would reprise in an Olivier award-winning performance for the West End production of the musical.

In 2017, he received a Tony Award for his portrayal of Cornelius in Broadway’s Hello Dolly! en face de Bette Midler.

His other stage credits include La Cage aux Folles (2004), She loves me (2016), Waitress (2019), et In the woods (2022), among many others. TV credits include American Horror Story et Parc centralboth in 2021.
