Vooruit does not yet appoint a new president of Parliament, Liesbeth Homans will stay until the end of 2024

The attribution of the position of assembly president is traditionally part of the negotiations for the composition of a new executive. Flemish negotiators from the N-VA, CD&V and Vooruit agreed on this occasion that the presidency of the Flemish Parliament would go to the Socialist Party. Vooruit, however, has not yet found the rare bird to perform this function.

Conner Rousseau (photo, archives) therefore asked the outgoing president, Liesbeth Homans (N-VA), to remain in office until the end of the year, the time necessary for the Flemish socialists to nominate the “suitable candidate “. “Our political group could well look like something completely different within two weeks,” it was argued at the Vooruit summit. “In the interest of continuity, we therefore prefer to leave Liesbeth Homans in place until the end of the year. This will give us time to find the right profile.”

With the appointment of several socialists within the Flemish government, several substitutes will indeed join the hemicycle in the coming days and thus modify the composition of the group. Conner Rousseau also indicated to VRT NWS that in view of the debate, Wednesday in Parliament, on the September Declaration delivered this Monday by the new Minister-President Matthias Diependaele, it was more judicious to take advantage of the experience of Liesbeth Homans to supervise this debate rather than hastily appointing a socialist replacement.
