The result was no doubt even before the election. Unsurprisingly, the authoritarian director of Belarus, Alexandre Loukachenko, 70, officially won a seventh term in the presidential election, Sunday January 26, with 87.6 % of the votes, according to an official survey carried out at the exit of Urns. The other four candidates all publicly supported the regime, while real political opponents are today in prison or exile.
The European Union (EU) denounced a “Election simulacrum” which has not been “Neither free nor equitable”and threatened new sanctions. Since Warsaw, Poland, the head of the Belarusian Democratic Forces in exile, Svetlana Tsikhanovskaïa, has also qualified the ballot as « farce ». The day before, his team had condemned the broadcast, by the Belarusian regime, of a false video generated by the artificial intelligence in which Mme Tsikhanovskaïa says he is withdrawing from his post as an exile leader. The interested party said it was a « fake »then called for the release of political prisoners and the holding of free elections.
