Rain, gusts up to 130 km/h… What to expect with the new storm Herminia this Sunday?

The new storm Herminia will generate strong gusts of wind in the west of the country, particularly in and the Pyrenees. Four departments have been placed on orange vigilance.

One disturbance that chases another. While the remains of storm Éowyn continue to hit this Saturday, January 25, bringing their share of rain, a new storm, named Herminia, will enter the territory this Sunday.

It will mainly affect the western side of the country, namely Brittany and the Pyrenees. On the menu: very strong gusts of wind “requiring special attention”, according to Météo France. Four departments, Finistère, Côtes-d'Armor, Pyrénées Atlantiques and Hautes Pyrénées, were thus placed on orange alert for violent winds.

“Gusts of around 130 km/h on the coasts and close to 100 km/h inland are expected,” writes Météo France in its latest bulletin.

According to meteorologist Guillaume Séchet, we should even expect winds reaching “150 km/h towards Ouessant and on the exposed capes”.

If Herminia will begin to affect the tip of Brittany from 6 a.m., the wind will strengthen in the Pyrenees during the morning before blowing strongly at midday.

We must expect “stormy gusts of 110 to 120 km/h in mid-mountains (at ski resorts) as well as locally in valleys”. “These gusts can exceed 150 km/h on certain exposed ridges or passes,” specifies Météo France.

The wind will strengthen again in the evening in the northwest and will even affect the center-east of the territory at this stage.

Rain on saturated soils

In addition to the strong wind, the meteorological service is worried about the bursts of rain which are expected to fall when the soil is already saturated, particularly on the tip of Brittany after the passage of storm Éowyn. Five departments placed on orange alert for flooding this Saturday will remain so this Sunday: Ille-et-Vilaine, , Mayenne, Seine-Maritime and Oise.

Storm Herminia – so named by the Spanish meteorological agency because of violent gusts expected on the Iberian Peninsula – is currently deepening over the Atlantic and progressing rapidly towards the south of Ireland, notes The Weather Channel.

In terms of temperatures, this Sunday, it will be generally mild across the country. In the morning, 2°C is expected in , 4°C in , 7°C in , and , 8°C in and , 9°C in and , 11°C in and and 13°C in .

In the afternoon, the thermometer will rise to 6°C in Lille, 8°C in and Alençon, 11°C in , and Chalon-sur-Saône, 12°C in , Montélimar and Brest. It will also be 13°C in , 15°C in Tarbes, 16°C in and Biarritz and up to 18°C in Perpignan.

Sunday will not be the last day of agitation. Météo France does not rule out that strong winds may still be present overnight from Sunday to Monday. “For Monday, we cannot exclude heavy precipitation from the north of the Alpes-Maritimes to the Hautes-Alpes, associated with a high rain-snow limit and therefore snowmelt,” it is noted in the forecast bulletin for dangerous phenomena. .

Strong waves will be monitored on the Breton tip as will strong swells on Tuesday on the Basque and Girondin coastlines.

On Wednesday and Thursday, wind and rain are still expected in the west of the country. Although saturated soils require caution, “no dangerous phenomena are expected over the period.”
