The Bird Protection League (LPO) and the National Museum of Natural History organize this weekend of January 25 and 26, 2025 their major national counting meeting. And they need the general public for this count is effective. The exercise is basic: observe the birds that come to your garden, on your balcony or in a park near you, for an hour.

Simple, but above all very useful: “These counts give an overview, on a large territory, of the different populations of birds, of their evolution. It is a way of seeing which species are still dynamic and which are in decline ”, explains François Beaujouan, treasurer of the LPO41. The more there are counters during these censuses, the more the figures speak. “Because it is always a little random in a sector, so the more data there is, the more they are cut and reliable. »»

The objective is to promote their protection

The decrease in certain worried bird populations “And accentuates, especially since the year 2024 was very wet with us, then the reproduction was complicated. »» The rain can destroy nests or broods. The manager at the LPO41 details: “This counting is above all a statistical tool, which allows you to see major developments, in order to then be able to do everything to promote their protection, their habitats, etc. »»

As for migratory birds, “We see them less this year, it may have been less cold in their countries. For example, I did not see a single northern Pinson. This count also allows you to see the migration areas. »»

What could we see in our gardens this weekend? Chicks “Who are there in number, just like the common pinsons”. But also red-gorges-“ The male is easily recognizable, but beware, the female is gray ” -, spectators fly “Less easy to recognize”, of the vertical “Predominantly of green”, possibly tarins of the alders “Whose wings are a little more yellow but I have not seen this year”, Or even pigeons, pears, crows or jays. Among others!

Four -step counting

To find your way around and do an effective counting, the Observatory of Birds (birdsdesjardins.fr) site offers cash and identification sheets, and describes what can be observed in its sector. It is interesting to consult him upstream of his time of observation. Finally, the birds of the gardens are more numerous if there are feeders: and as the counting is done in relation to the maximum number of individuals of the same species observed at the same time, it is easier around these installations.

François Beaujouan estimates that this necessary counts brought together several hundred of Loir-et-Chériens in the past years. And this is precisely the interest of being the greatest number to count and to be concerned with birds: “Together, it makes sense” !

Count the birds in four stages

  • Choose your observation location, settle comfortably and do not move. It can be a garden, a balcony or a public park …
  • Take an hour, watch in hand this weekend to observe them.
  • Note for each species the maximum number of individuals seen at the same time. For example, if you observe 4 blue chicks, then 2, then 1: note 4 blue chicks and not 7 (4 + 2 + 1), very clearly indicates the LPO site.
  • Finally, send your observations to the birdsdesjardins.fr site.
