A$AP Rocky’s lawyers to cast accuser as money seeker in opening statements at trial

Opening statements are beginning at the trial of rapper A$AP Rocky, who is accused of firing a handgun at a former friend. The presentation of evidence is set to begin Friday after a jury was seated in the case. The former friend, Terell Ephron, will be the prosecution’s key witness and the case could depend on his credibility. Rocky has pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. He faces the prospect of up to 24 years in prison with a conviction. It’s a major risk after he turned down a prosecution offer of a plea deal and six months in jail.

Kim Jones sharpens VIP-filled Dior men’s fashion with a structured, masculine recalibration

(AP) — The Dior’s men’s fashion show happened inside the historic Ecole Militaire with the Eiffel Tower looming above. Kate Moss and Robert Pattinson joined a star-studded audience for show at Paris Fashion Week on Friday. It was a slight but noticeable departure for Kim Jones. He is renowned for his gender-fluid designs. But Jones embraced a sharper and more traditionally masculine aesthetic this season. A minimalist and angular staircase descended onto the runway. It set the stage for Jones to unveil a collection inspired by the house’s mid-century heritage. The collection took cues from Christian Dior’s iconic “H Line.” Jones reinterpreted it as clean and structured lines for men.

Movie Review: Whatever you do this January, don’t book a seat for ‘Flight Risk’

-

In “Flight Risk,” Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace star in what Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy calls a truly forgettable thriller-comedy. In a sort of Dollar Store “Con Air,” Dockery plays a federal agent transporting Grace’s fugitive-turned-witness to testify against the mob. They need to get to Anchorage quick and enlist the help of a pilot — Wahlberg, a bro’s bro. Of course, not everyone is as they seem. Screenwriter Jared Rosenberg has an obsession with scatological humor and adds solving a government conspiracy as well as a meet-cute over the radio during this harrowing flight. The R-rated movie opens Friday.

Oscar nominations snubs and surprises, from Daniel Craig to Selena Gomez

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — The film academy had plenty of surprise nominations Thursday for the 97th Oscars. It’s to be expected in one of the more wide-open fields in recent history. Not too long ago, it seemed that people like Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman were destined for best actress nominations, while general audience disinterest in the young Donald Trump movie “The Apprentice” might have indicated its awards chances were dead on arrival. But the members of the academy had other things to say. Some snubs include Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Daniel Craig, Jolie, Kidman and Selena Gomez. Those that surprised include Felicity Jones, James Mangold and Monica Barbaro.

Mikey Madison, Zoe Saldaña, Jeremy Strong and others react to Oscar nominations

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mikey Madison of “Anora” watched the Oscar nominations from her hotel room bed, screaming along with her mother on FaceTime. She and many other newly minted nominees for the 97th Academy Awards expressed joy at being recognized, while also noting with sadness the devastation that the wildfires have wreaked on Los Angeles. The top contender for Oscars this year is the Netflix narco-musical “Emilia Pérez,” closely followed by another musical, the Broadway adaptation “Wicked,” and the post-war epic “The Brutalist.” The awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will air on ABC on March 2, from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Junya Watanabe puts a twist on classic Americana at Paris Fashion Week menswear show

PARIS (AP) — Junya Watanabe has opened his latest menswear show at Paris Fashion Week with beige hunting jackets paired with discreet shirts and ties. It was a deceptively classic start for the avant-garde Japanese designer, whose signature knack for subversive tailoring and patchwork soon disrupted conventions. What looked like classic Americana quickly morphed into something far less predictable. Pastels, bold colors and the designer’s famed use of patchwork disrupted a rugged aesthetic and reworked it into something more gender-fluid.
