Marco Odermatt triumphs for the first time on the Streif. The man from Nidwalden wins the super-G in Kitzbühel ahead of Austrian Raphael Haaser and his team-mate Stefan Rogentin. Several crashes cast a shadow.
Although he lost some time in the lowest part of the course, Odermatt was 11 or 30 hundredths faster than the first chasers at the finish. Haaser prevented a Swiss triple triumph with his exploit. Franjo von Allmen, who was still in the lead at the third-last intermediate time, finished in fourth place 15 hundredths behind Rogentin.
For Rogentin from Graubünden, it is the fourth podium finish of his career and second in seven days. With Justin Murisier (9th), a fourth Swiss made it into the top ten.
Numerous crashes
The race was interrupted several times due to a series of crashes. Alexis Pinturault, who returned from a cruciate ligament rupture in December, had to be transported away by helicopter due to a suspected new knee injury. Florian Loriot suffered the same fate, and Nils Alphand was another athlete from the French team that was already mourning the loss of Cyprien Sarrazin. Dominik Paris also landed in the snow on the rough Streif, but the Italian remained uninjured.
Odermatt, who is also aiming for his first victory in the Hahnenkamm downhill on Saturday and wants to close the last gap in his palmarès, is only the third Swiss Super-G winner on the Streif after Didier Défago (2014) and Didier Cuche (2010). Although the dominator of recent years did not manage a perfect run, it was enough for his second win of the season in this discipline. Since March 2022, the only time Odermatt has not finished in the top 5 in the super-G was last weekend in Wengen. Since then, he has won ten of the 21 races and finished on the podium 17 times.
-Thanks to Raphael Haaser, the crisis-ridden Austrians are extending their strong haul in their home Super-G. Although Friday’s race came too early for team leader Vincent Kriechmayr, who crashed in Wengen, the 22nd Kitzbühel Super-G will see an Austrian athlete on the podium for the 21st time.
