The importance of any competition is generally relative to the position of the team or individual at the time it is being played.
Take the Europa League, or the League Cup in England, two pieces of silverware that for some are no more valuable than a participation medal. But for the likes of Ange Postecoglou and Reuben Amorim they represent the only chance for success this season, and in the former’s case it could well be the difference between having a job or not come the summer.
Whether anyone seriously believes that Tottenham and Manchester United have a chance of winning is another matter entirely, but at least they’re both on the right track.

Ange Postecoglou somewhat ill-advised boast about always winning trophies in his second season could yet well comeback to haunt him, but Tottenham’s 3-2 victory at Hoffenheim in the Europa League boosted their hopes of automatic qualification for the last 16.
Son Heung-min’s brace means Spurs are up to sixth and look well-placed ahead of a final round of league games next Thursday when they host Sweden’s Elfsborg.

“I told them to enjoy it. Winning away in Europe, it’s a significant victory for us and gives us a good foothold to get into those top eight spots which will give us a week off.”
