Donald Trump was sworn in as the new president in the US capital Washington. What is happening, who is coming, what is Trump doing? All information here in the live ticker.
After the Republican’s surprisingly clear election victory in November last year, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. But the event is not over yet – and later Donald Trump wants to speak to his supporters in a sports arena. You can watch it live here:
10:25 p.m.: According to an Israeli media report, Trump is likely to end the ban on deliveries of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel. In addition, the Republican will probably lift the sanctions imposed by his predecessor Joe Biden against settlers in the West Bank who are accused of violence against Palestinians, reports Walla News, citing Israeli Ambassador to the USA, Mike Herzog. Trump is widely expected to pursue more pro-Israel policies than his predecessor, Joe Biden.
10:10 p.m.: Belgium’s Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem calls Trump’s return to the White House a wake-up call for Europe. Instead of focusing on retaliation for US tariffs, the EU should “focus on the challenges facing Europe, the decline in competitiveness and the productivity gap that we face.”
9:53 p.m.: The designated new head of the FBI, Kash Patel, also speaks to Trump’s supporters at the Capital One Arena. “Today we have received a gift from God to usher in a new dynasty, as we have just sworn in Donald J. Trump as our 47th president,” he shouts to them in the sports arena. “Our police officers, our sheriffs, our federal officers are some of the greatest warriors God has ever created,” he continued. They would now come first. Patel has yet to be confirmed in office.
9:45 p.m.: The dollar is giving way. Instead, other currencies such as the euro are in demand. According to analysts, these benefit from the fact that Trump will probably not immediately impose additional import tariffs. Instead, according to an employee, he wants to publish a memo that will focus on new priorities in trade policy, but will not order any new taxes.
-The dollar index, which measures the US currency against six other currencies, fell as much as 1.3 percent. Most recently it is trending at 108.26. Last week, when additional tariffs were expected to be imposed immediately after Trump was sworn in, it reached its highest level in 26 months at 110.17. The euro, in turn, rose in price by 1.2 percent to $1.0394. Last week it fell to $1.0177, its lowest level in two years.
9:16 p.m.: According to two employees of the Reuters news agency, the portrait of General Mark Milley, who was until recently the chief of staff of the armed forces, was taken down in the Pentagon shortly after Trump’s inauguration. A query about this from the Ministry of Defense initially remained unanswered.
The painting was unveiled just a few days ago. Trump has revealed a deep dislike for Milley, describing him as “slow to think and act” and an “idiot.” President Joe Biden preemptively pardoned Milley and others shortly before Trump’s inauguration to prevent any retaliation from his successor.
9:09 p.m.: The tech billionaire and close Trump confidant Elon Musk confounded people during a speech at the Capital One Arena in Washington with a hand gesture that was strikingly reminiscent of the Nazi salute of the National Socialists or the Roman salute of the Italian fascists.
Musk thanked Trump supporters in the gym in Washington for the election victory. This was not an ordinary decision, but rather a directional decision for human civilization. “Thank you, thank you!” says the billionaire. Then he brings his right hand to his heart and stretches it straight up.
Users on the short message service X are confused. Some are now accusing Musk of intentionally giving the Hitler salute. Still others downplay the significance of the gesture.
