Immigration, “peacemaker”… What to remember from Donald Trump's inauguration speech

Donald Trump, at the height of his political power, returns to power. Elected on November 5 after a campaign marked by two assassination attempts and a historic criminal conviction, he was sworn in on Monday, January 20.

Donald Trump became the 47th president of the United States. Under the dome of the Capitol, placing one hand on a Bible inherited from his mother, he raised the other to swear to “protect the Constitution”.

Presidential inaugurations usually take place outdoors, but protocol was thrown into disarray due to freezing temperatures. For the first time since 1985, the ceremony was held under the dome of the Capitol, the same where on January 6, 2021, his supporters tried to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden's victory.

Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Giorgia Meloni, Javier Milei, Jeff Bezos, Boris Johnson, Bill and Hillary Clinton… In front of a crowd of guests, Donald Trump gave a speech in which he has already announced that he will sign several presidential decrees from this Monday

• Donald Trump promises to make the United States “great again”

“America's Golden Age Begins Today”. This is how Donald Trump began his speech, assuring his fellow citizens that from today “our country will prosper”.

“Every day during my mandate, I will put the United States first,” he said, using his famous slogan “America First”.

He wants to recreate a “proud, prosperous and free nation”: “the United States will regain its greatness”, he said, giving himself the objective of “restore faith, wealth, democracy and freedom to our fellow citizens.”

He said that this inauguration day “marks the day of liberation” and that “the decline of America is over.”

• Donald Trump returns to “the attacks” against him

“I have been attacked like never before,” said Donald Trump in his speech. According to him, his enemies “tried to deprive (him) of (his) freedoms”, a reference to the legal cases in which he is involved.

“They also tried to take my life,” he also added.

Returning to the assassination attempt of which he was the victim during the presidential campaign, Donald Trump judged that his life “was saved for a reason”. “God saved me so that I could make America great again,” he declared. He promised to attack a “corrupt and radical elite” and said he wanted to “rediscover our national unity”.

• Donald Trump will sign several presidential decrees this Monday

He promised to tackle immigration. Donald Trump announced this Monday that he would declare a state of national emergency at the border with Mexico. The new president of the United States has assured that he will expel “millions and millions” of irregular migrants.

He said he would send “troops to the border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country.”

Another emergency measure: the Republican will declare a state of energy emergency to boost production and lower prices. As he already insisted during his campaign, Donald Trump repeated that he wanted to “drill, drill and drill again”. “We will be a rich nation again,” he declared, mentioning in particular “the liquid gold flowing under our feet.” He also wants “taxes against foreign countries”.

“The official policy of the United States is that there are two genders: male and female,” he also added. The new president also said he wanted the rehabilitation of soldiers who did not want to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

As he promised during his campaign, Donald Trump is attacking the environmental policy of the United States. He thus announced the end of the “Green New Deal”.

• Donald Trump wants to be remembered as a 'peacemaker'

The now 47th President of the United States wants to “develop the greatest army in the world”. Internationally, “I will be seen as a peacemaker, that’s how I will be remembered,” speaking “of the wars we will end and the ones we can avoid.”

Donald Trump notably cited the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, and the release of Israeli hostages, signed “the day before (his) coming to power”.

During this speech, he also confirmed his offensive position on the international level. He said he wanted to “take back” the Panama Canal and wanted to rename the Gulf of Mexico, a sea located south of the United States, as the “Gulf of America”.
