- In Austria, the Social Democrats clearly won the state elections in Burgenland despite slight losses.
- According to ORF projections, the SPÖ, which previously ruled alone, achieved 46.5 percent in the easternmost federal state of the Alpine republic.
- According to pollsters, the minus of 3.4 percentage points means the loss of the absolute majority.
According to projections, the right-wing FPÖ under the top candidate Norbert Hofer, who is considered to be moderate, has more than doubled its share of the vote to 23 percent. The conservative ÖVP loses heavily and gets around 22 percent.
The SPÖ, headed by state governor Hans Peter Doskozil, now has to find a coalition partner.

The result is considered a success for Prime Minister Hans Peter Doskozil, who is SPÖ leader Andreas Babler’s biggest opponent within the party. Doskozil can now strive for an alliance with the ÖVP or FPÖ. The SPÖ and FPÖ already formed a coalition in Burgenland from 2015 to 2019.
Doskozil pursues a special path within the Austrian social democracy. The former defense minister stands for restrictive asylum policy and calls for a cap on annual asylum applications in Austria.
The Social Democrat is also causing a stir with other campaigns: These include tax-financed recorders and skis for school children, as well as publicly paid salaries for people who care for relatives at home.
