Learner Tien of the United States will face his first test at the 2025 Australian Open as he goes up against former Grand Slam winner Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the men’s singles tournament in Melbourne, Australia. Tien advanced to the second round of the Australian Open after besting Camilo Ugo Carabelli in five-set showdown, 4-6 7-6(3) 6-3 5-7 6-4. Tien, the 2024 NextGen Finals runner-up, overcame 16 double faults by winning 74 points on his first serves and breaking his Argentinian opponent seven times. Tien has now won his last four matches, including the wins in three qualifying matches that earned him a spot in the main draw of the first Grand Slam of the year. Medvedev averted a disaster in the first round after fending off an upset bid from Kasadit Samrej of Thailand in a five-set thriller 6-2 4-6 3-6 6-1 6-2. Medvedev managed to climb from a 1-2 set hole by winning 91 percent of his first serves while converting key breakpoints in the four and fifth sets. Medvedev reached the Australian Open final three times, including last year.
