Cameron Diaz fans have been waiting years for her return, and it’s finally happening. Netflix’s “Back in Action” drops on Jan. 17, perfectly timed for a winter streaming spree.
The final trailer for the family-friendly film is out, and the anticipation is building faster than you can say, “Welcome back, Cameron!”
A film made to bring families together
In “Back in Action,” Diaz and Jamie Foxx star as retired CIA spies-turned-parents. After taking a break from the action to focus on their family life, they’re pulled back into the fight when enemies realize they’re still very much alive.
Naturally, the parents slip back into their old combat routines as easily as they drive their kids’ carpool routes. But don’t worry, they still manage the chaos of parenthood — with a few explosions along the way.
Diaz explains the movie is a perfect opportunity to bring families closer together.
She told Netflix, “The fun thing about this movie is that we have the humor, we have the action, but it’s really about having the ability for parents to sit down with their kids and have an opportunity to watch something where the parents can say, ‘See, we’re just human beings, too.‘”
Why Diaz stepped away from the spotlight and what made her return
Diaz retired from Hollywood a decade ago to focus on building her own life, according to Variety.
She told Variety, “Nobody’s opinion, nobody’s success, no one’s offer, no one’s anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and building the life that I really wanted to have.”
Diaz added, “It really comes to: What are you passionate about? For me, it was to build my family.”
However, in an interview with Empire, Diaz said there was one only one thing that would sway her back to the scripts: if Foxx was her co-star.
“Seriously. I had other opportunities along the way and I was always saying, “No. I’m not doing it, I’ve told you… What? Jamie asked? Jamie? Oh, I can do a movie with Jamie!” said Diaz.
When asked by Empire if she is back in Hollywood for good, Diaz said, “If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to. I’m not defining anything. I’m just open to whatever makes sense for me and my family at any given moment.”
