Pensions: questioned by the PS in full Assembly, François Bayrou explains: News

Questioned by Olivier Faure, during current affairs questions to the government, Wednesday January 15, François Bayrou affirmed that the social conference with the social partners could lead to three outcomes: an agreement and a text submitted to Parliament, the continuation of the reform current or a new text which will be the subject of debate in the Assembly.

It is an issue which does not fail to crystallize tensions within the hemicycle. During the current issues session in the government, Wednesday January 15, François Bayrou was invited by part of the opposition, including the First Secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), Olivier Faure, to return in more detail to his roadmap regarding the controversial pension reform. As captured in the LCP images, the Prime Minister was questioned by the deputies on the framework of the negotiations with the social partners around a return to the pension reform.

In response, the head of government put forward three possibilities. The first is that a “agreement emerges naturally“with the social partners and will”the subject of a text submitted to Parliament“The second is that none”sort of agreement” does not emerge. In this case, “it is the previous reform which will continue to impose itself“. This hypothesis earned him the bronca of some of the opposition deputies, in particular some of the New Popular Front (NFP). Finally, François Bayrou returned to a third possible avenue, the one where “room for improvement“are identified,”without general agreement“. “If this is the case, we will have a text which will take up these adaptations and these progress, and we will submit it to the Assembly“, explained the Prime Minister. “We believe that this meeting of a social conference will lead to an agreement“insisted François Bayrou when responding to Olivier Faure.

A complex equation for François Bayrou

Without an absolute majority in the National Assembly, the government of François Bayrou must, like that of Michel Barnier, increase negotiations to avoid being censored. The thorny subject of pensions has notably earned him several meetings with the socialists who want compromises so as not to participate in the motion of censure brandished by La insoumise (LFI). Supporters of a pure and simple repeal of the pension reform, socialists, ecologists and communists are demanding, at a minimum, the suspension of this law brought by Élisabeth Borne in 2023 and which had been passed in force, by a 49.3. The socialists are demanding that this suspension be effective from the start of the renegotiation of the reform envisaged for six months with the social partners, and not only in the event of its success. Conversely, François Bayrou must strive not to undermine his LR and Macronist allies, supporters of continued reform. A complex equation whose solution will only emerge at the end of negotiations with the social partners.
