Novak Djokovic has laid claim to another piece of tennis history.
The 37-year-old Olympic tennis champion overtook Roger Federer’s all-time record for the most major singles matches played by beating qualifier Jaime Faria 6-1 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-2 on Wednesday (15 January).
It was Djokovic’s 430th Grand Slam singles match and now means he takes sole ownership of the record for the most singles matches in the Open Era, ahead of Federer (429) and Serena Williams (423). No other tennis player has reached the 400-match milestone.
In addition to surpassing Federer, the Serbian is now also the first man over the age of 30 to reach 150 Grand Slam wins but Djokovic isn’t intending to stop there.
If he can make it to the final and win the men’s title in Melbourne, Djokovic would become the first person to win 25 Grand Slam singles titles, moving him clear of Australian Margaret Court.
