Benfica visited Farense in a game valid for the round of 16 of the Portuguese Cup and won 3-1, with the right to an upset.
In a game counting for the round of 16 of the Portuguese Cup, Benfica went to the Algarve and beat Farense 3-1. The Eagles even started losing but turned the score around.
They practically beat the Algarve team, as Tomané took Farense ahead in the 7th minute of the match. Corner taken by Mehdi Merghem and Tomané rising higher to open the scoring. Benfica tried to respond immediately but were unable to create much danger during the first half, except for a couple of tight saves from Ricardo Velho. Note also the injury to Di María during the first half.
In the second half, Benfica still took a while to come back under pressure but, in the blink of an eye, they went from 1-0 to 1-3. First by Andreas Schjelderup, then by Arthur Cabral and finally by Alexander Bah, the Eagles completely turned the tie around in six minutes and in the 62nd minute they won comfortably. Until the end there were no major highlights to record, with Bruno Lage’s men controlling the remainder of the match.
-With this result, Benfica advances to the quarter-finals of the “queen competition” of Portuguese football, where the winner of the meeting between Braga and Lusitano de Évora awaits. Farense falls by the wayside in the competition and turns its attention to the Primeira Liga, where it is in 17th place.
