PAPILLION, Neb. (WOWT) – A razor-thin margin separates Gretna voters on a program that would give the city more say in taxes applied to the Nebraska Crossing Good Life District.
The final unofficial tally for the special election, posted at 6:18 p.m. Tuesday, showed 49.6% voting against, and 50.4% voting in favor — a separation of only 15 votes. About 50 minutes earlier, the vote had favored “against” by a similiar margin.
The vote among registered voters living in Gretna was conducted entirely by mail. Ballots were due to the county by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the Sarpy County Election Commission‘s final unofficial update, the special election had 34% turnout, with 2,076 ballots cast, out of 6,122 elligible registered voters.
City leaders have said they wanted to create a program that gives them more control over taxes in the district.
The Nebraska Examiner reported early Tuesday that the developer on the project, Rod Yates, had filed the paperwork terminate his application on the “tourist magnet” project, saying his vision was “no longer viable under existing terms with the state,” citing the Good Life Transformational Projects Act.
