After the draws in Lille and Monaco earlier in the weekend, Olympique de Marseille took to the pitch at Stade Rennais with the possibility of getting ahead of the pursuers. Still second in Ligue 1, Roberto De Zerbi’s men presented themselves at Rohazon Park with the same eleven as the one lined up against Le Havre. For its part, Rennes lined up a classic 4-2-3-1 with Matusiwa, Blas, Kalimuendo, Gouiri and the first appearance of Samba in goal.

In a very calm start to the match where Wooh prevented Greenwood from offering OM the first opportunity (15th), the Phocaeans kept their foot on the ball against the Bretons preferring to remain cornered in their half of the field. But after a clear Marseille domination and a deflected shot from Rabiot (21st), Rennes benefited from a penalty after a handball from Murillo. Kalimuendo saw his delivery pushed back by Rulli on his post (32nd)!
Decisive Mason Greenwood
And the rest of the match heated up as Kalimuendo caught up by opening the scoring after good work from Blas (1-0, 43rd). A short-lived advantage, since Murillo found Greenwood for the equalizer after a good counter-attack (1-1, 45th). And half-time did no good for SRFC, who lost Kalimuendo to injury, before a cross header from Rabiot to allow OM to go in front (2-1, 49th). A goal which calmed the Rennes, forcing Samba to pull out all the stops to avoid conceding a third goal (61st and 64th).

OM thought they could win the match thanks to a penalty, but the VAR canceled a handball signal in the area. Without shining, but with mastery, the Phocéens can return to Marseille in a good mood since they are now five points ahead of Monaco, third in the Championship, before facing Lille in the Coupe de France. For his part, Jorge Sampaoli missed his return against his former club and sees Rennes stagnate in 13th place. The Bretons will go to Troyes, in the 1/16 finals of the Coupe de France.
