Many countries reacted this Thursday, January 9, to the election of the new president of Lebanon, General Joseph Aoun, ending a vacancy of more than two years at the head of the country, which worsened its economic and political crises.

Joseph Aoun received 99 votes out of 128 in Parliament during a second session in the afternoon. He obtained only 71 votes in the first round of voting in the morning, the 30 deputies from the pro-Iranian Hezbollah and its ally, the Shiite Amal movement, having voted blank.
But a meeting in Parliament between representatives of the two parties and the commander-in-chief of the army in Parliament, between the two rounds, changed the situation, ensuring him the majority necessary to win.
“Lebanese, France is at your side,” says Macron
In the middle of the afternoon, Emmanuel Macron sent his ” Congratulations “ to the new president of Lebanon. “This crucial election (…) opens the path to reforms, restoration, sovereignty and prosperity of Lebanon”said the French president on the social network “Lebanese, France is at your side”he added.
In a message published on X, the United States, through its embassy in Lebanon, committed to working “in close collaboration” with Joseph Aoun. “We pledge to work closely with President Aoun as he begins his efforts to unite the country, implement reforms and secure a prosperous future for Lebanon”declared the embassy on X.
Israel hopes for “good relations between neighbors”
Lebanon’s regional neighbors also congratulated Joseph Aoun. Starting with Israel, with whom Hezbollah, an Islamic organization based in Lebanon, signed a ceasefire on November 27. “I congratulate Lebanon on the election of a new president after a long political crisis,” commented Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on the social network
The head of diplomacy of the Hebrew country notably expressed the hope on Thursday that the election of the new Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun, will contribute to the “stability” of the country and “good relations between neighbors”.

Iran also welcomed the election of Joseph Aoun, hoping that the two countries will cooperate to serve their “common interests”according to a message from the Iranian embassy in Lebanon published on the social network X. “We congratulate brotherly Lebanon on the election of General Joseph Aoun as President of the Republic (and) we look forward (…) to cooperating in different areas in a way that serves the common interests of our countries”indicated the Iranian mission in Beirut.
Just like Qatar which congratulated itself “of the election of the commander of the Lebanese army, General Joseph Aoun” by the voice of his Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The rich Gulf monarchy is hopeful that this election “will contribute to establishing security and stability in Lebanon and realizing the aspirations of its people”.
