“I don’t really know if he’s interested”, Le Graët wonders about Zidane at the head of the Blues

The former president of the French Federation is not sure of Zidane's interest in ensuring the succession of Didier Deschamps at the head of the Blues.

Didier Deschamps having announced his departure from the team at the end of the 2026 World Cup, the question of his succession arises with a huge favorite, Zinedine Zidane. If Philippe Diallo, the current president of the French Football Federation, contacted by Le Figaro, preferred to touch on the possible appointment of the former number 10, his predecessor, Noël Le Graët showed himself a bit more talkative on the subject.

“I don’t know, frankly, that’s up to the executive committee (of the FFF)”first said the former boss of French football responding to questions from RMC Sport on the identity of the future coach. And when Zidane's name was mentioned to him, Le Graët seemed doubtful. “I don’t really know if he’s really interested, I haven’t had any contact with him”he added before insisting not to interfere in the decisions of the FFF: “It’s the job of those who are in place.”

Zidane-Le Graët, strained relations

Le Graët did not really want to linger on the subject of Zidane, a character who contributed, quite involuntarily, to precipitating his downfall in the winter of 2023. While in office, the Breton was very harsh about “Zizou” whose name was then mentioned to take charge of the Brazilian selection.

“I would be surprised if he went there. He does what he wants, it's none of my business. I never met him and we never considered parting ways with Didier Deschamps. I don't care, he can go wherever he wants, in a club, he would have as many as he wants in Europe, a big club. A selection, I hardly believe it as far as I’m concerned.” Comments which provoked the reaction of Kylian Mbappé, author of an acid message on social networks and plunging the leader into a media storm.
