The rebound is confirmed for the Golden Globes, according to the audience figures announced Monday January 6 by the American channel CBS, the day after the broadcast of the 82e edition of this ceremony which rewards films and television series in the United States.

With 10.1 million viewers in front of their screens on Sunday evening, the program confirmed the renewed interest that accompanies it, seeing its audience increase by 7% in one year (9.4 million viewers in 2024), after the historic low of 6.3 million viewers recorded in 2023.

Weighed down by the pandemic, then by a scandal in 2021 revealing the racism and corruption of their members, these awards have been profoundly reformed and are now on an upward slope.

Long seen as an essential springboard to the Oscars and Hollywood's favorite night, the Golden Globes almost disappeared. The ceremony was boycotted and deprived of television broadcast in 2022. Bought the same year by a billionaire, who deeply diversified their jury, the Globes were relaunched on the CBS channel in 2023, rather than on NBC.

No stars missing

Their new version seems to be establishing itself in the American audiovisual landscape. Among the big stars nominated on Sunday evening, there was no notable absentee, a sign that the ceremony is regaining its former glory.

The evening, which took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills (California), crowned two big winners: Emilia PerezJacques Audiard's musical odyssey about a Mexican drug trafficker's gender transition, won four awards, including best comedy. And The Brutalista long portrait of an architect who survived the Holocaust and tries to rebuild his life in the United States, won three awards, including best dramatic film.

The ceremony was also distinguished by the diversity of its prize list, with a statuette for the Brazilian Fernanda Torres (I'm still here), and the first major award in Demi Moore's career, for her role as a former glory addicted to a youth serum in the French film The Substance.

Successful bet for presenter Nikki Glaser

The first woman to present the Golden Globes solo, comedian Nikki Glaser succeeded in her bet, flooding the ceremony with well-felt jokes, largely making us forget Jo Koy's missed performance in 2024. To the point that the American press is already mentioning the possibility that it will take place again in the next edition.

However, the Globes audience remains well below its pre-pandemic levels. In 2020, more than 18 million viewers watched the show.

All major awards ceremonies saw their audiences drop during the pandemic, and are now experiencing a gradual rebound. Without returning to their previous levels, particularly because young people spend more time on social networks or streaming platforms than in front of the television.
