Jessica Knight and Jimmy Palmer deserve to be together again after their disappointing breakup in NCIS season 21, but they need to take their time. When Knight accepted a position at her dream job in California in the NCIS season 21 finale, it was almost certain that the beloved couple would be forced to break up, as neither wanted to do long distance. Shortly after, the NCIS season 22 premiere confirmed their biggest fears: Knight and Palmer had separated.
The couple seems to be on the mend in NCIS season 22, as their friendship has mostly gone back to normal, but it is clear that both Knight and Palmer have lingering feelings for each other. Neither feels comfortable with the idea of the other one dating someone else, which makes their breakup all the more heartbreaking. Now that Knight is back in Washington, the time is right for them to get back together, but they need to go by it slowly.
NCIS Update Makes Knight & Palmer Getting Back Together Inevitable
It Might Take A While But Knight & Palmer Are Meant To Reunite
While the future of Knight and Palmer’s relationship has been uncertain for much of NCIS season 22producer Steven D. Binder has offered a glimpse into their future. In a recent interview, Binder teased Knight and Palmer’s relationship and implied it might reach a satisfying conclusion sometime this season. His comments gave some hope that the tension between Knight and Palmer might finally be resolved sooner rather than later. Binder said:
“I think you’re going to get a sense that maybe they’re better off together. So we need to see how they’re not better off together first before we see that they’re better off together. And that’s the fun seeing how they’re not better off.
From Binder’s comments, it is clear that the NCIS creators want the audience to root for the couple. However, it also seems like there will be obstacles in place that might help and hinder Knight and Palmer’s decision to reunite. They are great friends, and they made a great couple, but they will likely use their time apart to really flesh out their decision and see if it is the right choice for them. Either way, Binder’s quotes pretty much confirm that Knight & Palmer will reunite at some point.
NCIS Season 22 Can’t Rush Getting Knight & Palmer Getting Back Together
Having The Couple Reunite Too Quickly Would Seem Choppy
As great as it would be to have Knight and Palmer get back together as soon as possible, it would leave NCIS season 22 feeling rushed. The show made a big deal of Knight’s move to Cam Pendletonand there was even growing anticipation that Palmer would follow her, considering his stance against doing a long-distance love affair. That didn’t happen, as they decided to just go their separate ways. Given the suspense surrounding Knight’s decision and their subsequent breakup, having them get back together so soon would make everything seem rushed.
Given the suspense surrounding Knight’s decision and their subsequent breakup, having them get back together so soon would make everything seem rushed.
Since NCIS has committed to their breakup, they have to stay separated for at least a bit more time. CBS already walked back on their past decision by bringing Knight back to the show after she left in the NCIS season 21 finale. It made her choice to leave anticlimactic. Reuniting Jessica Knight and Jimmy Palmer too soon would give them the same fate. A slow build could be good for them. They have already broken up once, so having a slow build-up to their reunion could help them solidify their relationship and give the couple a solid foundation.
Knight & Palmer Taking Their Time Is The Opposite Of Their NCIS Romance So Far
Knight & Palmer Are Unlike Any Other NCIS Romance
Most NCIS couples have been slow-burn romances that have taken place over several seasons. This trend is typical of network TV shows that are spread out over many years. However, Knight and Palmer’s NCIS relationship is an exception. They started dating shortly after meeting, making them possibly the healthiest romantic couple in the franchise. However, going slow after their breakup could give them the build-up they need. It would be the complete opposite of what they have done so far, but maybe going slow could give them a better chance at staying together for longer.

NCIS stars Katrina Law and Brian Dietzen address whether Knight and Palmer could revive their romance following a recent season 22 confrontation.
As Binder’s quote implied, it could be good for both Knight and Palmer to see how they fit with other people before deciding to get back together. As fun as it will be to watch their relationship unfold in the second half of NCIS season 22, the characters need to see it for themselves too. Maybe they rushed into the relationship back in season 19, and now they will finally get the chance to think about their other options legitimately before reuniting for good. Even if they are meant to be together, they need to come to the realization themselves.
