A 27-year-old supporter of KAA Gent is fighting for his life after being hit with a glass bottle on New Year’s Eve. The fight started after a discussion about a bomb. The prosecutor’s office has seven suspects, but no one has been arrested yet.
The young man from Ghent had the best intentions for New Year’s Eve: earn some extra money by staying sober and driving his friends and acquaintances around safely by car. That noble pursuit ended in a nightmare around 4 am.
The young man dropped off two friends at the Zandberg, behind the police station in Belfortstraat. A fight broke out between the two and some passers-by. The suspected cause was a bomb thrown at a dog. When the sober Buffalo wanted to intervene, he received several blows to the head with a glass bottle.
Coma
The driver initially decided to drive further, but it soon became clear that he needed care. He was rushed to hospital. “He was taken to hospital with serious injuries,” says the Ghent public prosecutor’s office. “The victim has been placed in an artificial coma and is in a life-threatening condition. The two people he dropped off were slightly injured.”
The public prosecutor’s office is conducting an investigation into the precise circumstances of the serious fight. “We have seven suspects, but no arrests have been made yet.”
