New snow and freezing rain: After the calm – albeit foggy in many places – weather of the past few days, the weather situation will change on Thursday.
From Thursday afternoon there will be heavy, persistent rainfall from the northwest, as Meteo Switzerland predicts. In the evening the snowfall line is expected to drop to low altitudes. On the northern slopes of the Alps, 20 to 35 centimeters of fresh snow is expected by Friday morning.
The clouds will clear in many places on Friday. It could be quite sunny in the inner Alps and at the southern foot of the Jura, but it should remain cloudy in the foothills of the Alps.
We’ll start Saturday with fog, which should partially dissipate over the course of the afternoon. Then it will be sunny before clouds move in from the west and lead to snowfall or freezing rain towards the evening. During freezing rain, special caution is required on the roads as black ice can form.
Freezing rain is also likely on Sunday night. Afterwards it will become cloudy and precipitation is possible on the north side of the Alps. The sun should appear for a short time in the afternoon.
The forecast for next week is difficult, as Meteo Switzerland explains. The reason for this is the proximity to the polar front. Next week, everything from snow to the lowlands to rain in the ski areas is still possible.
