Jan. 2—The year 2025 is off to a cold start, and it is only going to get colder.
Temperatures today for the Bluefield area will be around 31 degrees with a chance of snow returning to the forecast on Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va.
There is a 50 percent chance of snow Friday with daytime highs only near 30.
But temperatures will get even colder by the weekend. A low of 14 degrees is expected Friday night with a daytime high of only 22 degrees on Saturday, according to the extended forecast. Temperatures Saturday night will drop to a low of about 14 degrees.
There is a chance of snow again on Sunday with accumulations possible. A high of only 32 degrees is expected Sunday. Then snow is likely Sunday night, according to the forecast.
Snow is expected again on Monday for the Bluefield area.
According to AccuWeather, the bitterly cold temperatures will continue with several blasts of arctic air expected during the first half of January.
“Bitterly cold air will make a big return to the East Coast starting this weekend,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok said in a press release. “This could end up being the coldest January since 2011 for the U.S. as a whole.”
The severity of the cold air could be dangerous, damaging and disruptive in some places and is expected to create a surge in demand for heating, which could lead to higher energy bills, AccuWeather said in the press release.
AccuWeather adds temperatures could be 10-20 degrees or more below the historical average next week across much of the eastern and central United States.
