A person shot in East Boston on Wednesday evening was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Police responded to the area of Marion St. at approximately 6:07 p.m. on New Year’s Day, according Officer Michael Torigian, a department spokesperson. They found the victim and transported them to a local hospital.
Boston homicide detectives were dispatched to the scene, which is still considered active, officials said. No arrests have yet been made.
Officers cordoned off much of Marion Street and the surrounding area on Wednesday night, and could be seen placing evidence markers on the ground. At one point, investigators marked and photographed a large red object, which appeared to be a jacket, at the corner of Marion and Paris Streets.
Neighbors said that the area, which is just minutes away from the MBTA Airport station, is usually quiet. Michael Reading, 33, said that before the faint bangs on Wednesday evening, the only noise he’d ever heard were the occasional dirt bikes in the street.
-Reading said he wasn’t personally concerned about safety in the area, though he suggested that other neighbors might be.
“I’m not super worried about my safety [here] all the time,” he said. “But we’ll see. If it comes out to be just a random killing, that might be a little freaky. But if it was just some beef between two people, that could happen anywhere.”
No further information was immediately available.
