Manhunt Underway After Passengers Flee Plane that Made Emergency Landing at Malta Airport

A manhunt is underway in Malta after several passengers fled a Turkish Airlines flight that made an emergency landing in Malta on Wednesday 1 January 2025.

Turkish Airlines flight TK619, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8, was bound for Marrakesh, Morocco from Istanbul. Flight crew had elected to make an unscheduled diversion to Malta after a Moroccan passenger fell ill whilst enroute.

Manhunt Following Emergency Landing in Malta


Shortly after landing at Malta Luqa International Airport (MLA), multiple passengers exited the aircraft and escaped the scene.

Airport authorities alerted the Maltese police who launched a search operation, involving both police officers and members of the Armed Forces of Malta. The Moroccan passenger who prompted the emergency landing is currently under arrest at Mater Dei Hospital.

The incident has raised serious security concerns, and authorities are investigating the motives behind the passengers’ escape. Initial reports suggest that the individuals who fled may have been attempting to illegally enter Malta.

Turkish Airlines TK619 Istanbul-Marrakesh


Turkish Airlines flight TK619 had departed Istanbul Airport (IST) at 1131 local time on 1 January. The flight then set course normally for the destination of Marrakesh Menara Airport (RAK).

The diversion to Malta Luqa International Airport as the flight approached Sicily. Flight crew conducted the diversion under a normal transponder squawk code.

The aircraft conducting the TK619 service was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, registered TC-LCI.

Security Measures Enhanced

Airport authorities have enhanced security measures in response to the incident. Maltese police have increased their presence at the airport while investigating the incident.

Increased security checks are being conducted on passengers and their belongings, and additional surveillance measures have been implemented.
