Fifteen vehicles from the Brussels public transport company were damaged during New Year’s Eve in Brussels, Stib said on Wednesday. These included 11 trams and four buses, several windows of which were broken.

These vehicles were targeted by young people in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek. “Around Verboekhoven Square (also known as the bear cage, Editor’s note), five buses were targeted with projectiles around 10 p.m.“, declared a spokesperson for the Stib. The public transport company then decided to divert buses from this route in order to protect its staff while continuing to provide service to users.

A passenger on a bus that was stoned by young people was injured by shards of glass. Slightly injured, he was taken to hospital.

A little later in the evening, around ten trams on lines 55 and 62 were also attacked. These attacks took place near the Masui tram stop, not far from Verboekhoven Square, also in the City of Donkeys. “In ten minutes, the windows of seven trams were broken. We think they are the same authors“, says the spokesperson.

Because of the crowds, drivers often didn’t notice the damage until after their shift. It is therefore likely that further damage will be observed in the coming days.

Despite the damage caused to several vehicles in its fleet, the Stib estimates that the “New Year’s Eve went well overall, with no major incidents to report.“. Some 125,000 passengers were transported on New Year’s Eve.
