While Prince William and Kate Middleton likely exchanged meaningful gifts over the years, there’s one early gift from William that Kate still teases him about.
Christmas shopping for a stylish princess like Kate Middleton can be a challenging task, and it took Prince William some time to get the hang of it. While the couple has likely exchanged meaningful gifts over the years, there’s one early gift from William that Kate still teases him about. In an appearance on Peter Crouch’s podcast, the Prince of Wales revealed that he once gifted Kate a pair of binoculars. Speaking about his unusual choice, Prince William thought binoculars would be a perfect present, but he now can’t understand why he chose them.
“I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once. That was early on in the courtship. I think that sealed the deal. They’re nice binoculars. I got convincing myself about it, these are really amazing. She’s looking at me going ‘They’re binoculars,’ like, ‘What’s going on.’ It didn’t go well. Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars. It seemed like a good idea at the time,” William said on Peter’s BBC Radio Five Live podcast.
The Royal Family of Britain has a unique tradition of giving, quirky and humorous presents during the Christmas holidays. One memorable example is when Prince Harry gave the late Queen Elizabeth a bath hat with the phrase “Ain’t life a b*tch.” Kate Middleton also participated in the fun tradition when she gifted Prince Harry a “grow-your-own-girlfriend kit,” referencing his high-profile romances during the time, before meeting Meghan Markle.
When Princess Diana first joined the royal family in 1981, she was unaware of their Christmas tradition. Three months pregnant with Prince William, Diana was preparing for her first Christmas at Sandringham. Despite feeling unwell from morning sickness, she bought expensive gifts for her new family members. However, she was surprised and embarrassed when she received a toilet paper holder in return after gifting her sister-in-law, Princess Anne, a cashmere sweater.
As per Vanity Fair, Diana speaking to the royal biographer, Andrew Morton had said, “It was highly fraught. I know I gave, but I can’t remember being a receiver. Isn’t that awful? I do all the presents, and Charles signs the cards. [It was] terrifying and so disappointing. No boisterous behaviour, lots of tension, silly behaviour, silly jokes that outsiders would find odd, but insiders understood. I sure was [an outsider].”
This year, Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrated Christmas at the Sandringham estate with their children and other members of the royal family.
