François Bayrou announced the composition of his government this Monday, December 23. It notably includes two former Prime Ministers, including Manuel Valls.
Former socialist minister Manuel Valls entered François Bayrou's government this Monday, December 23, BFMTV learned. He was appointed Minister of State in charge of Overseas Territories.
Manuel Valls has been absent from any government function since his departure from Matignon in December 2016. He inherits a very large portfolio where he will notably have to manage the situation in Mayotte, devastated by the deadly passage of Cyclone Chido ten days ago, and in New Caledonia.
Former Prime Minister under François Hollande
Manuel Valls was Prime Minister between March 31, 2014 and December 6, 2016, when François Hollande was President of the Republic, after having been Minister of the Interior between 2012 and 2014.
Since 2017 and his departure from Matignon, under François Hollande, the former Prime Minister has had a series of electoral disappointments. After his failure in the left-wing primary in 2017, he supported Emmanuel Macron rather than the socialist Benoît Hamon, who won this primary. The party of the President of the Republic refused him nomination during the legislative elections that same year but chose not to put a candidate in front of him.
A year later, Manuel Valls announced that he was going to leave all his mandates in France, to be a candidate in the municipal elections in Barcelona, his city of birth. He came in fourth position in the ballot but nevertheless remained in the Catalan city as a municipal councillor. He will resign from this mandate in August 2021.
Invested by the Macronist camp in the fifth constituency of French people living abroad during the 2022 legislative elections, Manuel Valls was eliminated in the first round.
