Four passengers in a vehicle fled after the collision that occurred on Friday morning with a train, near a level crossing in Wavre, the spokesperson for the Walloon Brabant public prosecutor's office said in the afternoon. The car driver's life is in danger.
Rail traffic was interrupted on Friday morning following the collision that occurred around 7:45 a.m. between a car and a train in Wavre, near the Chaussée de Bruxelles level crossing. A car, with five people on board, had passed the red light at the level crossing as the barriers began to come down. The vehicle moved onto the rails, finding itself immobilized on the tracks before being hit by a train traveling between Louvain and Charleroi-Central.
The driver of the vehicle was seriously injured and taken to hospital. According to the prosecution, his vital prognosis is compromised. For an as yet undetermined reason, the four other occupants of the hit car fled. The Walloon Brabant public prosecutor's office requested the intervention of two legal experts at the scene of the collision. Train traffic resumed around 11:30 a.m. between Ottignies and Sint-Jooris-Weert (Weert-Saint-Georges), in Flemish Brabant. The railway infrastructure did not suffer major damage, with the exception of a barrier which had to be repaired, Infrabel said.
