Local hero Mattia Casse wins a turbulent Super-G in Val Gardena. Marco Odermatt saves his 4th podium of the season.

What takes a long time finally comes good: At the age of 34 and 15 years after his debut, Mattia Casse celebrated his first World Cup victory at the Super-G in Val Gardena. The Italian won ahead of the competition on the “Saslong”, mainly thanks to a strong drive in the 4th sector (out of 5).
But only by a touch: Jared Goldberg, who started with number 26, came within a hundredth of a second of the Italian thanks to the best time in the final section. The lighting conditions had temporarily improved.
Casse, who reached the podium for the first time in the same place two years ago, had already impressed in the downhill training with 1st and 2nd places. “My skis ran well on the rather soft surface, now I’ll try to attack tomorrow too,” said the 34-year-old in an SRF interview.
Odermatt satisfied – changeable circumstances
Beaver Creek winner Marco Odermatt finished 0.43 seconds behind in second place. There were no major mistakes to be seen from Nidwalden, but he lost over two tenths in sectors 2 and 4 each. Nevertheless, he was satisfied with his performance: “I drove exactly the race I wanted and didn’t know where I could have gone faster.”
Odermatt, who achieved his fourth podium finish of the season, pointed out the changing wind directions and said: “Then things can happen quickly.” The varying degrees of snowfall may also have played a role.

Rogentin was allowed to flirt with a podium place for a long time. Only the Norwegian Fredrik Meller pushed the Graubünden native to 4th place, and Goldberg’s exploit ultimately made it 5th place.
Lars Rösti had a great run with the high starting number 48 and achieved by far his best World Cup result with 8th place. Justin Murisier and Franjo von Allmen became victims of the circumstances after Daniel Danklmaier’s fall caused a longer interruption and thus fresh snow on the slopes.

The Italian tour in the men’s World Cup continues with 3 races in the next 3 days. The descent in Val Gardena is on Saturday, followed by a giant slalom and a slalom in Alta Badia on Sunday and Monday. The speed weekend in Bormio follows in the Old Year week.
