During this holiday season, it is always comforting to watch “Mom, I missed the plane”, snuggled up under your blanket. One of the actors in the film recently admitted to not having understood anything about the film at the time, despite his participation in the filming.
The ultimate Christmas film, Mom, I Missed the Plane continues to delight the whole family since its theatrical release in 1990. Carried by the little prodigy Macaulay Culkin, the work delights us with its feel good atmosphere , its hilarious gags and its comforting snowy atmosphere.
At just 10 years old, Macaulay Culkin became a world star thanks to this film by Chris Columbus, who would later offer us the first two parts of Harry Potter. If you know the story well, you already know that the actor plays young Kevin McCallister, flanked by a large family and the burden of his brothers and sisters.
Kieran Culkin is nothing
However, did you know that Fuller’s character, Kevin’s cousin, was played by Macaulay’s real brother, Kieran Culkin? It was the first role for the budding actor, then 8 years old. At the time, he didn’t understand much of what was happening to him and didn’t even know that his brother was the star of the film.
“I had no idea what this movie was when I saw it, even though I was acting in it. I was at the premiere and I was dying of laughter. It was the thing. funniest movie I’ve ever seen, but I had no idea what the movie was about.”confides the 42-year-old artist to Los Angeles Times.
I had no idea what this movie was when I saw it, even though I was starring in it.
According to Kieran Culkin, Chris Columbus and his team didn’t bother too much with directing the children’s actors (apart from Macaulay) and gave minimalist directions: “Drink that Coke, wear glasses, say what you memorized, be cute and go home”he remembers.
A funny joke
The actor also confides that he was the victim of a joke by Devin Ratray, who played Buzz, Kevin’s older brother. “He lied to me and told me he was the star of the film. And I believed him. Then, when I saw the film, I quickly realized what was going on and said to myself : Macaulay was on set all the time, it’s logical that the story is centered on him”emphasizes Kieran Culkin.
He lied to me and told me he was the star of the movie. And I believed him.
Since Mom, I Missed the Plane, Kieran Culkin has come a long way. In 2023, he won the Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Roman Roy in the cult series Succession. On February 26, we will find him in the cinema in A Real Pain alongside Jesse Eisenberg.
The story follows two cousins with diametrically opposed characters, David and Benji. They meet again during a trip to Poland to honor the memory of their beloved grandmother. Their odyssey will take an unexpected turn when the old tensions of this unlikely duo resurface against the backdrop of the history of their family.
