the essential
The 6th edition of Albi Jazz festival, concocted by the Scène nationale Albi-Tarn, will take place from January 26 to February 1. An immersion with In and Off which will allow magnificent bubbles of music to sparkle.
It has become a meeting place loved and adopted by the Tarnais. Albi Jazz Festival makes its annual return from January 26 to February 1 for its sixth edition. A bubble of concerts and improvisations, to warm hearts and ears during this winter period. The menu keeps the same ingredients. The Grand Théâtre and its “Magic mirror” will be the publishing hubs. But the director, Nathalie Besançon, has always had as a guideline a culture for everyone and in every corner of the department. It is in this state of mind that she has programmed a voice – cello duo, with Leïla Martial and Valentin Ceccaldi, which will perform in seven towns. (Lescure-d’Albigeois, Carmaux, Saint-Julien-du-Puy, Cunac, Saint-Christophe, Puygouzon, Gaillac).
Paid and free concerts
We continue to play outside with the first concert at the Maison de la musique in Cap ‘Découverte, on Sunday January 26. This is the sparkling and talented Louise Jallu, who in Quartet, will introduce “nuevo tango”, paying tribute to the Argentine composer and musician, Astor Piazzolla. Return to the stage of the Grand Théâtre. On Wednesday February 29, it’s time for the inauguration of the festival and the opening of the Off in its Magic Mirror (marquee decorated and fitted out for concerts). It’s free, heated, quality. You can even eat a plate and have a drink while listening to good jazz. And this, until Saturday evening. From 8 p.m., it’s the first concert at the Grand Théâtre with Eve Risser and Alexandra Grimal. These two musicians come together around an original repertoire, interspersed with tributes to two figures of 20th century music: Carla Bley and Charlie Haden. In the second part, we will find Oan Kim & The Dirty Jazz.
On Thursday 30, still on the stage of the Grand Théâtre, two groups will delight the public. We will start with Hugues Mayot and his quintet l’Arbre Rouge. Through writing anchored in chamber jazz, always melodic, he gives a rhythmic dimension to this orchestra.
From jazz to blues to African music
The evening will continue with African Jazz Roots-Seetu. Around Simon Goubert, a major drummer on the European scene, and Ablaye Cissoko, a great kora virtuoso, African Jazz Roots was born. Today as a quintet, the group provides us with a connection to the sources of traditional Senegalese music.
On Friday, it’s time for the Louis Sclavis Quintet, followed by the Incandescent Orchestra around Sylvaine Hélary, who imagines a large ensemble, bringing together nine musicians, juxtaposing ancient, modern and electronic instruments, between baroque, progressive rock, folk and contemporary jazz .
To end this sixth edition, on Saturday February 1, the great Géraldine Laurent and her quartet will take the stage. The final concert will revolve around the last little genius of the blues, Jontavious Willis. With such a program, winter will be more beautiful and shorter.
