North Korean soldiers are said to have died in the war between Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainian military claims that they are poorly prepared.

There has been speculation for months about what the North Koreans are doing: Are they soldiers? Or just logistical supporters? Something completely different? North Korea’s dictator is said to have sent around 10,000 people from Pyongyang to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. But whether these are really soldiers has so far remained uncertain. Now the Ukrainian military wants to know exactly. Eventually some of them were taken care of.

Around thirty North Korean soldiers were wounded or killed in battles in Kursk, the western Russian region where Ukraine has been waging an offensive since August. The fact that the people are North Koreans is said to have been recognized through drone images. The US military confirms that there is relevant evidence. Dozens are believed to have died. The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported something similar.

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which has been waged since February 2022, appears to have actually become a war that uses the soldiers of a third country. And according to reports, the North Koreans on the Russian side are turning out to be what then South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun cheekily described them as in October: “cannon fodder.”

Confused soldiers running around on the battlefield

The Washington Post quoted an apparently astonished Ukrainian military man on Tuesday. Russian soldiers always moved forward in lines, close to each other, to protect each other. The soldiers who are now in Kursk differ from this.

“The North Koreans are running across the fields, there are so many of them. “They don’t understand what’s happening,” reports the Ukrainian drone commander, according to the US newspaper. It is difficult for him to assess whether the Russian army is intentionally sending these soldiers into fire. In any case, the number of these apparently confused soldiers has increased in the past few days. The drone operators would have an easier time with them than ever before. However, such information can currently hardly be verified independently. (bzbasel.ch)

This year, too, fewer children were born in Switzerland than last year. The downward trend continues across Europe – with three exceptions.

Having children is out. And not just in the short term. This is what the latest Swiss birth statistics show: The decline continued in 2024, at least until September. Until then, the still provisional figures are available and show that women in Switzerland had even fewer children in 2024 than in 2023.
