Billie Eilish is back for Vanity Fair’s annual Time Capsule interview after skipping last year’s edition, ready to share fresh insights into her 2024 journey.
Since she was 15 years old, Eilish has been participating in the recurring Time Capsule series with Vanity Fairwhere she answers the same set of questions each year. From what she ate that day to her social media milestones and reflections on personal growth, the interviews have become a beloved tradition for fans. The “Birds of a Feather” singer participated consistently from 2017 to 2022. While she filmed a 2023 edition, it was never released. Fast forward to 2024: Vanity Fair has announced the release of this year’s interview, along with sneak peeks of the unreleased 2023 footage.
In a 37-second teaser clip posted to Vanity Fair’s social media, the singer reflects on the project’s origins. “I can’t believe the way my life has gone and where it is now. I mean, it’s just, like, the craziest f***ing thing in the world,” she stated. “I remember they were like, ‘Yeah, they want to do this interview where you’re going to just do this regular interview, and then, like, in a year, maybe you’ll do another interview.’”
The upcoming video, titled “Billie Eilish: Same Interview, The Eighth Year,” is set in the context of her Hit Me Hard and Soft era. Back in 2017, the artist was just beginning her career with her breakout single, “Ocean Eyes,” and had 257,000 Instagram followers. Fast forward to her Happier Than Ever era, and her follower count had skyrocketed to 94.1 million. By 2022, she surpassed 106 million. Over the years, she’s spoken about major milestones, including earning additional Grammy Awards, releasing a documentary, finishing a world tour, and headlining Coachella.
A unique charm of the annual Time Capsule videos is witnessing Eilish’s evolving sense of style, particularly through her iconic hair colors. Fans have watched her transition year after year, from blue hair to dark hair with green streaks, to classic blonde, and finally her black hair with bangs. Each era marks a phase of her musical journey and a form of self-expression that fans have come to adore.
In true Time Capsule fashion, she sat down in October to film this year’s video, reflecting on how much has changed, and how much has stayed the same.
