In Mayotte, satellite photos make it possible to estimate the extent of the damage, but also to guide relief efforts to the most affected regions.
Satellite images reveal the extent of the devastation in Mayotte on Tuesday December 17. In the center of Mamoudzou, all the houses collapsed. To the north, in Kawéni, a shanty town seems completely razed. According to satellite images, nearly 2,000 houses are affected. 12 schools and 80% of buildings are destroyed. The inventory is carried out by 25 engineers from Sertit, who have been working day and night since the cyclone struck.
“We work on almost all disasters, so we’re used to it, but this level of damage is very impressive“, confides Jérôme Maxant. They map each building and each devastated road to help the emergency services. “It’s complicated on the ground to have an overview. Whereas on the satellite, we have a view of all the damage, so we can quickly provide information to scale the debates and direct towards the most affected areas“, explains the engineer.
