Andre Onana is finally starting to earn praise after enduring a rocky start to life at Manchester United.
After struggling initially and costing Manchester United a place in the Champions League knockouts, Andre Onana showed his character shined throughout the campaign as his performances improved. He has also been a regular presence for his nation since forming a U-turn on his decision to retire from international football.
Cameroon has benefited from Onana’s return with an unbeaten record in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.
Additionally, Onana has been one of United’s most important players this season. The 28-year-old won the club’s Player of the Month accolade for September and picked up the Premier League Save of the Month award on two separate occasions.
So, there has been less mistakes and more crucial saves, which is what is to be expected of United’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Andre Onana and Sofyan Amrabat make CAF FIFPro Men’s Best XI
To celebrate the best of African football this year, Onana was joined in the Best XI by former United loanee Sofyan Amrabat.
The two players were recognised for their performances for both club and country. On top of that, they shared the same highlight from last season playing key roles in United’s FA Cup triumph over Man City.
2024 CAF FIFPro Men's XI: Andre Onana, Achraf Hakimi, Kalidou Koulibaly, Chancel Mbemba; Mohammed Kudus, Sofyan Amrabat, Franck Kessie, Yves Bissouma; Mohamed Salah, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman.
Moreover, Onana won the FIFPro Player Impact Award for his inspirational charitable work through the Andre Onana Foundation.
The Andre Onana Foundation provides free medical care and surgeries to underprivileged communities in Cameroon and beyond.
Onana topping Premier League charts for clean sheets
In the Premier League, Onana has managed six clean sheets so far.
The only goalkeepers to match that are Arsenal’s David Raya and Everton’s Jordan Pickford.
Andrew Onan | 6 |
Jordan Pickford | 6 |
David Raya | 6 |
Matz Sels | 5 |
Alisson Becker | 3 |
Dean Henderson | 3 |
It bodes well that United are conceding fewer goals from open play since Ruben Amorim arrived as head coach, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement because too many goals from set pieces are being conceded.
Onana will keep more clean sheets if United can learn how to defend from corner kicks.
