Latvian basketball player Janis Timma committed suicide in Moscow, Russian agencies TASS and RIA Novosti reported, citing sources.
According to them, the body of 32-year-old Janis Timma was found in the entrance of a residential building in the center of Moscow. The Baza Telegram channel reported that Timma’s body was found on the ground floor of a house on Sergei Makeev Street on the night of December 17. According to Mash, Timma committed suicide in a business hotel, while Shot reported that the athlete’s body was found in the hostel. Shot claims that the cause of Timma’s death was asphyxia, “VChK-OGPU” writes that he died as a result of a fall from a great height.

A TASS interlocutor in the operational services said that next to the deceased there was a phone with a last wish before his death. Telegram channels Baza and “112” reported that the iPhone screensaver contained the number of his ex-wife, singer Anna Sedokova, and a request to call her. The day before his death, December 16, Timma published a story on Instagram in which he congratulated Sedokova on her birthday.
On December 9, a magistrate in the Khoroshevsky district of Moscow granted Anna Sedokova’s claim for divorce from Janis Timma. The couple has been married since 2020; Sedokova’s claim for divorce was filed in court on October 16, 2024. After Sedokova went to court, Baza writes, Timma published videos that made subscribers suspect that he was preparing to commit suicide.
Janis Timma is a graduate of the Riga basketball club “ASK Riga”, he played for them in 2011-2013. He was selected 60th overall in the 2013 NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. At various times, Timma represented many Latvian clubs, including Ventspils, Russian Zenit, UNICS and Khimki, Greek Olympiacos and American Osceola Magic (farm club of the NBA team Orlando). Since 2024 he has been a player for the Spanish club Obradoiro.
As part of the Latvian national team, Janis Timma in 2010 became a bronze medalist at the European Championship among players under 18 years of age. He played for the main Latvian national team at the European Championships in 2015 and 2017, as well as during the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Olympics.
