Stade Malherbe Caen finishes on a very bad grade. Traveling to Dunkirk for the last Ligue 2 match of the year, the Malherbistes collapsed (3-1). Trailing 2-0 shortly after the hour mark, Gabin Tomé had the merit of briefly restarting the machine with his first goal in the professional group. But the Caennais could not do more and will spend the break relegatedin 16th place in the ranking.
Not much life at the start of the match
Frank actions are rare at the start of the meetingbut it is the Northerners who prove to be the most dangerous in the zone of truth. Even if Yannis Clémentia does not have to intervene, the Caen defenders are away from the ball during the Dunkirk attacks and the ball drags from time to time in the Normandy area. For their part, the Malherbistes were unable to play and apart from two set pieces in the first quarter of an hour, the ball did not often enter the northern penalty area.
The two teams are penalized by several offside over the first half hour. Dunkirk even sees Yacine Bammou's goal refused for illegal position (30'). The end of the first half is almost exclusively in favor of the Dunkirks who show themselves more and more regularly near the Caen area. Until this against Caen which ends with a strike from Tidiam Gomis repelled by Ortola. The ball returns to Alexandre Mendy, but it is blocked by Sanganté at the last moment (43'). The only flash in the weedy game of this first half.
SM Caen sinks at the resumption
There is no better Caen side on the restart and it is logical that Dunkirk opens the scoring a few minutes after halftime. Yacine finds Maxence Rivera headers the ball to Yacine Bammou. The resumption of the old Caen is countered by Romain Thomas and deceives Clémentia (1-0, 53′). The Martinique goalkeeper saved the furniture again a few minutes later with a strike from Rivera (56′). Caen cannot do it and Nicolas Seube is forced to make three changes an hour into the game. Leo Miliner, Godson Kyeremeh and Noé Lebreton enter to try to provide solutions to a Caen team which is not coping.
Dunkirk came close to doubling the lead on a free kick from Rivera which almost hit the target (60'). A few minutes later, it was on a corner that Sanganté deflected the ball and found Vincent Sasso at the far post who pushes the ball into Yannis Clémentia's net (2-0, 65′). Nicolas Seube is disappointed and the end of the match promises to be long. However, Caen managed to score a goal. After a poorly cleared ball by the Dunkirk defense, Gabin Tomé did not ask any questions and scored his first professional goal (2-1, 73′). In the process, Yannis Clémentia wins at point blank range against Yacine Bammou and Malherbe is still in the game fifteen minutes from time (75′). But it is ultimately Dunkirk which will kill the match on a penalty converted by Gaëtan Courtet (3-1, 83′). The last minutes are just a succession of passes for the locals.
The truce will be difficult for the Stade Malherbe. Even if there remains the 32nd final of the Coupe de France to be played in Guingamp on Sunday December 22, 2024, it is difficult to see how find positive after this last one of the year in Ligue 2.
