The earth shook on the evening of Monday December 16, 2024 on the Côte d'Azur.
It was around 10:20 p.m. when an earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale, according to the Sismoazur laboratory, was felt on a large part of the Alpes-Maritimes coastline.
According to the first testimonies collected, it was also felt in part of the Var department.
The epicenter, at a depth of 2 km, was located at sea, around thirty kilometers from Nice or Monaco.
“Vibrations throughout the apartment”
In the minutes that followed, many Internet users gave their testimony on the CSEM website, the Euro-Mediterranean seismological center, which presents itself as a “independent scientific organization that provides real-time information on earthquakes”.
“Big boom”writes a resident of Biot. “My chair moved, the window shook, the family felt vibrations throughout the apartment”writes this one, from Saint-Laurent-du-Var. “A sudden big tremor woke us up”says another, who says he lives in Sospel. “I'm still in shock, everything shook fortunately the children are in bed”writes a resident of Carros.
In a few minutes, an influx of testimonies from Nice, Roquefort-les-Pins, Grasse, Tourrettes-sur-Loup, Pégomas, Eze, Beausoleil, Antibes, Mouans-Sartoux, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Menton, Vence… But also from the Var (Montauroux, Draguignan) or Italy (Bordighera).
No firefighter intervention
Contacted by Nice-Morning Around thirty minutes after the earthquake, the Alpes-Maritimes departmental fire and rescue service (Sdis06) confirmed that no intervention had been initiated by the firefighters following this earthquake.
