Switzerland knows its group for EURO 2025. Coach Pia Sundhage believes they will progress.
One can certainly speak of the luck of the draw that Switzerland claimed in the draw for the home EURO next year. With Iceland, the national team received the nominally weakest team from the second pot. And even from Pot 3, tougher calibers than Norway could have met the national team.
National team coach Pia Sundhage is primarily happy that she can “finally start working”. But the Swede doesn’t want to know anything about a “feasible group”. “If you just look at the world rankings, that’s correct. But I’m not a big fan of it. Our opponents will probably think the same of us.”
The Icelanders are taking part in the European Championships for the fifth time in a row and beat Germany, among others, in qualifying. Finland is one of three European Championship participants ranked behind Switzerland (23rd) in the FIFA rankings. The Finns qualified for the playoffs by beating Scotland. «We have the chance to move forward. We need this faith,” says Sundhage.
“Sniff” in the Nations League
Switzerland will face Norway and Iceland in the Nations League next spring. The national team will play their last game against Norway on June 3rd, and just a month later they will meet the Scandinavians again in the opening game in Basel. That’s not necessarily an advantage for Sundhage. After all, you don’t want to reveal all your cards. “But we will be prepared in any eventuality.”
“Scandinavia Cup” was the first thought that came to Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic’s mind when she looked at the group. The Swiss record goalscorer believes that her chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals are given. “We’ve played against everyone and won against everyone.” The 34-year-old expects “intense and difficult games. All teams have a chance to advance.”
If Switzerland manages to get one of the first two group places, they would face opponents from Group B in the quarter-finals. World champions Spain, Italy, Portugal and Belgium face each other in this.
That’s what the opposing coaches say
