He will be the linchpin of François Bayrou’s system at Matignon. Senior civil servant Nicolas Pernot has been appointed chief of staff of the new prime minister, according to information from the Figaro.
It is a formal break with the previous head of government, Michel Barnier. This 62-year-old man, general director of services in the Grand Est region, is a specialist in local authorities and close to the president of the Democratic Movement (MoDem). His predecessor Jérôme Fournel came from the senior state civil service. He had been director general of public finances and did not hide his closeness with Alexis Kohler, the secretary general of the Élysée.
