Mignolet ensures a turning point in the top match against Genk with a crucial penalty save: “It was a calculated gamble”
Twenty minutes before the final whistle, the world could look completely different for Club Brugge. With Tolu behind the ball for an eleven meter, blue-black was able to fall behind in a dominant match. Simon Mignolet foiled that with a – afterwards – match-deciding save. “It was agreed in advance to dive there,” the goalkeeper shares.

Was the penalty save the turning point of the top match between Club Brugge and KRC Genk?
“Maybe, yes,” smiles hero of the day Simon Mignolet. “But even if that ball went in, I don’t think we deserve to lose today.”
The goalkeeper did not face regular eleven-meter specialist Steuckers, but Tolu faced him in the match from the spot.
“They have all already kicked in different places. It was a bit of a calculated gamble. It was the agreement in advance to dive there. Fortunately, he also kicked it there.”
Of course, you know that at some point you will run into problems with such a series.
Simon Mignolet
A weak kick, an excellent save and two goals later, Club is 1 point behind the leader.
The national champion is currently on a strong run across all competitions. The last defeat dates back to October 22, in the Champions League against AC Milan. Blue-black last lost in the competition exactly one month earlier (against Ghent).
“The momentum is with us, indeed,” Mignolet nods. “Of course you know that at some point you will be confronted with the light in such a series.”
“We just have to win the next match every time. Fortunately, we have a lot of them in a row, so we can quickly forget the previous one.”
