Mamelodi Sundowns’ newly appointed head coach, Miguel Cardoso, is gearing up for his debut in charge against Raja Casablanca in the CAF Champions League, taking place at Loftus Versfeld this Sunday. The Portuguese tactician has made an impassioned plea for unity among his squad as they seek to turn their fortunes around.
The Brazilians are seeking their first victory in the opening trio of their group stage fixtures, having endured a frustrating goalless draw against AS Maniema Union at home, followed by a 1-1 draw away to AS FAR in Morocco. These performances led to the dismissal of former coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
Following Mngqithi’s exit, the Sundowns management promptly secured Cardoso’s work permit, allowing him to take his place on the touchline for the crucial match against Casablanca. Cardoso was officially introduced at Chloorkop on Tuesday, the same day Mngqithi’s parting was confirmed.

“It’s imperative that we strengthen our defensive strategies and reorganize our approach,” stated Cardoso. “This requires solidarity and commitment, as no individual player holds more importance than the team. We possess quality, but we must channel that quality collectively, as football is fundamentally a team sport.”
Challenges are inevitable, according to Cardoso, but he insists that togetherness is the key to overcoming them. “Strong defensive organization is vital to the game; we must be solid, organized, and work as one unit. Whether an offensive or defensive coach is irrelevant; to clinch trophies in demanding matches, we must rise to the occasion or risk defeat.”
The former coach Rulani Mokwena had similarly struggled with Sundowns’ set-piece defense, and Cardoso has pinpointed this as an area in dire need of enhancement if Masandawana hope to progress in the Champions League.

“Set-pieces are critical moments in a match, and we need to fortify our defense during these situations. Equally, we aim to score from set-pieces, but such improvements require time, which can only be earned through victories,” he added.
“Ultimately, we’re focused on establishing and cultivating this winning mindset. Success isn’t achieved merely on match day; it begins from the very first day of training. That’s the spirit I aim to instill at the club.”
