BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WSBT) — Parts of Michigan are bracing for freezing temperatures, strong winds, and slick roads as winter weather moves in.
The big thing here is to plan ahead, take things slow, and allow enough room in between your car for enough time to stop on potentially slick roads.
Dispatchers in Cass and St. Joseph County say there have been no reports on road closures or accidents.
Berrien County did experience two temporary road closures earlier, including the bypass due to slide-offs, but those have since been cleared and reopened.
Police say they will be out patrolling and urging drivers to pack essentials like blankets, flashlights and a charged phone in case of emergencies.
“Plan ahead, take extra time when you are traveling, give yourself extra time. Always drive defensively, be prepared to stop – allow extra room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of yours in case someone needs to stop,” said Greg Sanders, Berrien County Undersheriff.
Officials remind you that texting while driving is illegal in Michigan, but hands free calls to 911 are allowed if you need help.
Again – the big thing to stay cautious about are the roads turning into ice overnight and that morning commute.
