Category by category, Google published on Tuesday the most frequent searches carried out in each country. For France, a few words and obvious personalities stand out… but also a few surprises. Detail review.
Sport in the spotlight
First there is the “overall ranking” – i.e. Google’s “search trends”. Without too much suspense, sport largely dominates with ''Euro 2024'', ''Paris Olympic Games 2024'' and ''African Cup of Nations 2024'' in the top 3.
But also ''School holidays 2024'', deceased celebrities like ''Alain Delon'' or ''Michel Blanc'', or even ''American presidential elections''. ''France Travail'' and… ''Kendji Girac'', which hit the headlines in the spring, close the top 10.
Next come the most sought-after “personalities” – all sectors of activity combined. Surprise: the short-lived Prime Minister Michel Barnier largely dominates other more “established” celebrities, such as Kendji Girac or the sportsmen Léon Marchand and Teddy Riner.
Four women appear in the top 10: the Prime Minister designated by the New Popular Front Lucie Castets, the vice-president and former American candidate Kamala Harris, the Minister of Culture Rachida Dati and the boss of the Ecologists Marine Tondelier.
Léon Marchand, always in gold
In this very “sporty” year, Google has also listed the 10 most searched for athletes in France. Léon Marchand won the gold medal, ahead of Teddy Riner in silver and Imane Khelif in bronze. The “boss” of the Paris Olympics, Tony Estanguet, only appears in 10e position, behind table tennis player Félix Lebrun or American gymnast Simone Biles.
In the culture section, the series Anthracite, Broceliande et The Gentlemen constitute the top 3 series, when that of films is dominated by A little something extra, Le Comte de Monte Cristo et Vice-Versa 2.
''Why dissolve the National Assembly''
Google also publishes slightly more unusual rankings, such as the top 10 'what', the top 10 'why', 'how'… where we discover questions a priori unusual: ''Why doesn't he watch my stories anymore'' or ''How to sew a bubble cover?''.
But also the most serious ones, like ''what is Mpox'', ''how to vote by proxy'' or… ''why dissolve the National Assembly''.
Finally, the most sought-after cooking recipes are entitled to a category of their own: ''baked figatelli'' dominate, ahead of great classics such as béchamel sauce, yogurt cake or even quiche Lorraine.
But Google does not explain how a recipe as unrepresentative of traditional French cuisine as ''overnight oats'' (a porridge) was able to take sixth place in this ranking, between tiramisu speculoos and pasta with carbonara…
