Here we are: the duel between McLaren and Ferrari for the Constructors' world championship title comes to an end this Sunday! At the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the last race of the 2024 Formula 1 season, one of the two teams will be titled and end a long drought without a world crown. Ironically, these two historic teams obtained their last world title in F1 the same year, in 2008: Lewis Hamilton was then crowned Drivers' world champion with McLaren, while Ferrari won the Manufacturers' title with Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen.
At the dawn of this last race of the season, it is McLaren who has the advantage over Ferrari. With 640 units on the clock, the British team – which has been chasing a first Manufacturers' title since 1998! – is 21 points ahead of the Italian team (619 points). A position which allows the Papayas to approach the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a more comfortable manner, especially since Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will start on the front row this Sunday. In this last round of the year, there are still a maximum of 44 points to go for (25 points for 1st place, 18 points for 2nd place, 1 point for the best lap).
For McLaren to be assured of the title, it must score a minimum of 24 points in Abu Dhabi… in the event that Ferrari achieves the perfect result with the double and the fastest lap in the race. Otherwise, Ferrari must not score 21 points (or 22 points, if the Scuderia does not win in Abu Dhabi) more than McLaren for the Woking team to win the title. If McLaren wins the Grand Prix this Sunday, it will be assured of the title regardless of Ferrari's result.
For Ferrari, the task promises to be complex, especially with fairly handicapping starting positions (3rd for Sainz, 19th for Leclerc) behind the 100% McLaren front row. The Scuderia must absolutely place its two cars at the top of the ranking at the finish to have a tiny chance of the title, knowing that it does not have its destiny in its hands.
