At the game between VfL Wolfsburg and TSG Hoffenheim, a mini-set and a five-year low are looming in the spectator stands. The number of spectators in the Wolfsburg Volkswagen Arena will probably reach five figures.
Just over 10,000 spectators at Wolfsburg against Hoffenheim
After thousands of seats remained vacant in Wolfsburg's Volkswagen Arena for the DFB Cup second round game against Borussia Dortmund, things will be even bleaker for VfL Wolfsburg in the evening. Just over 10,000 spectators are expected for the round of 16 between Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim. VfL Wolfsburg is facing the smallest crowd at a competitive game in their home arena in five years.
This is how many seats remained free in the arena, which now only has a capacity of just under 29,000 spectators, for the Europa League home games in the 2019/20 season – apart from the games closed to the public or with spectator restrictions. At that time, 10,112 spectators saw the home game against FK Oleksandriya, 11,620 spectators saw the home game against KAA Gent and 10,802 spectators saw the home game against AS St.-Étienne.
For the first time in a year there were fewer than 20,000 spectators in Wolfsburg
For the first time in over a year, the official number of spectators in Wolfsburg fell below the 20,000 spectator mark. Last season, 16,031 spectators saw the 1-0 cup win against RB Leipzig in the second round. It was the Wolves' lowest attendance in the past 18 months. In the current season, 26,294 spectators officially watch the Wolves' home games.
Only a few away fans from Hoffenheim were there
In keeping with the low demand on the part of the host, there is also hardly any interest on the part of the guests. Only a little over 100 tickets were sold in advance for the guest area. A total of up to 200 fans from Kraichgau will make the long journey to the Autostadt on Wednesday evening. It will be the smallest crowd of guests in this year's DFB Cup season. So far this dates from the first round game between Hildesheim and Elversberg. Around 200 fans from Saarland traveled to Lower Saxony.
The smallest crowd was in the game between Bremer SV and SC Paderborn. With 3,500 spectators, the Bremen stadium on Panzenberg was officially sold out. There will at least be a few more spectators in Wolfsburg for the round of 16 game this evening.
